I'd prefer to keep the English text in the code.
That way we have some kind of additional documentation (e.g., don't have to deduce from the code what option is meant).
And it makes sure that there's always a sensible (though not localised) fallback name for the function even if we forget to update the message files.

You can use the "real" English text as maketext message identifiers as well (also being usable as fallback there).

As far as I understand it, the gettext function used now comes with Wx. 
So switching to Locale::Maketext would add another dependency, wouldn't it? 
If that's the case we should probably wait and see if we run into any shortcomings of the current solution before deciding about abandoning it.
